A Loss of Independence in the Land of the Free

What is the "land of the free" when you have no personal independence? What is freedom of religion when you don't decide for yourself? What is being free from one's control only to be under another's? Is it expected? Do you honestly believe autonomy comes without some sort of price? I cannot understand why you would rather be held under someone's boot than stand up and sacrifice for the right to be yourself.
